VAT Returns and Payroll

We provide an excellent in house payroll service and bookkeeping service using Xero and VT Transaction+ software. We can provide you with weekly or monthly payroll advices as well as completing the annual statutory returns related to pay. We can also advise on human resources issues such as entitlement to sick and maternity pay.

With the introduction of Making Tax Digital (MTD) the accurate and timely completion of VAT Returns is a legal requirement. We can take over this task and arrange online filing, thus allowing you to concentrate on running your business.

Business Taxation

Our standard services for most small businesses includes the preparation of quarterly VAT Returns, monthly payroll, PAYE forms, P11D Returns of Expenses and Benefits and annual tax computations of business profit and relevant tax returns using our in house computer systems.

We also act as an in house tax department for larger clients, computing corporation and deferred tax provisions for inclusion in statutory accounts, filing Returns with HMRC and working closely with top firms of auditors as well as finalising and filing Returns with HMRC. Our Tax Partner is also available to deal with corporate taxation issues of a more complex nature.

Personal Taxation

Personal taxation can be more complex than business tax. Since the introduction of self assessment, automatic penalties are levied for the late or incorrect filing of Returns. We will keep you up to date with changes of legislation and ensure that your statutory obligations are met. We provide professional expertise in order to proactively identify opportunities and provide solutions.

Our years of experience mean that we can advise on risks and work out the right approach to work the enquiry and mitigate any potential tax liabilities. We can handle all the correspondence, attend meetings on your behalf and manage the whole process to conclusion whilst you get on with running your business. We are also able to offer fee protection against the cost of HMRC enquiries to include compliance visits to all our clients.

Tax Planning

"Every man is entitled if he can to order his affairs so that the tax attaching under
the appropriate Acts is less than it otherwise would be."

Lord Tomlin, IRC v. Duke of Westminster (1936)

HMRC has declared war on anti avoidance and unveiled a plan to make avoidance "not worthwhile". Recent budgets have brought new and complex avoidance scheme regulations. Retroactive and retrospective legislation is now considered fair game.

The role of the professional advisor seeking to do his best to help his client (in the words of Lord Tomlin) "order his affairs" so as to minimise his tax burden has become more and more difficult. It is our belief, however, that no matter how hard the task might be, we have a duty to help our clients protect their income and capital.

Whether you are a fledgling business or established and growing, you will want to make sure that you are making the most of the tax breaks available to you. We will tailor structures within the legislative framework to suit your requirements and proactively identify opportunities to mitigate tax liabilities. This is especially important in the early years, when businesses are at their most vulnerable and when bright ideas, teamed with common sense, can really make the difference between success and failure.

VAT

Since 1973, when VAT was introduced to the UK, it has grown from a relatively simple tax to a complex minefield of legislation and case law. Over the years Customs and Excise has introduced new rules mainly to protect revenues or target perceived mischief and avoidance.

As well as the compliance aspects of VAT, businesses should consider the VAT impact of a proposed transaction. Careful planning can bring significant gains and improved recovery of VAT.

We have an up to date knowledge of VAT compliance rules which helps to avoid penalties and interest charges raised by HM Customs and Excise which often penalise innocent errors.

Whilst we deal with every type of business, we have extensive experience in assisting recruitment agencies operating and placing contractors abroad with the correct charging provisions.

If you would like a VAT review of your business to check the correct VAT treatment of a transaction please contact us.

Exit Planning

Over the years we have assisted a number of clients with building their businesses and growing them for a possible sale or float. By working with you to plan an exit strategy well in advance we can ensure that all opportunities are identified and an appropriate plan is put in place in order to maximise the benefits of your efforts. We can bring in the right balance of technical expertise and practical experience to handle what may turn out to be a complex and lengthy transaction.

CCH Fee Protection

Increasingly HMRC is attempting to maximise the tax it collects by opening aspect enquiries and compliance checks, rather than full enquiries. With greater powers than ever, HMRC can turn the spotlight on your tax affairs at any time.

It's vital that you involve your accountant from the outset. Without professional representation, you could easily end up paying more tax than necessary.

HMRC enquiries are time consuming and the professional fees involved in obtaining the best result for you can be considerable. We recommend that you protect against such costs by joining our CCH Premier Protection scheme.

Whatever the nature of HMRC's investigation, the scheme will cover the professional fees involved. What's more, if you are a business client, it will give you access to the CCH Business Support Helpline, an invaluable source of guidance on a wide range of business-related law.
